Dear USA.   Remember when you were an ideal for the world ? I do remember, back in the Seventies. My parents who have been young in the Fifties, were big fans of you. You brought us the washing machine and the dryer for everybody (sorry, the Germans were faster with the Volkswagen, but never mind) and more.    You brought us Elvis and Rock'n'Roll. You brought us Jack Kerouac and Carlos Castaneda. Freedom and easy riding. Woodstock and Jimi. I mean I was 12 at that time, but it caught on. We saw all the hippies and others protesting against an unjust WAR in Vietnam. We were impressed.   We admired you.   We all wanted to be like you. An open society where everybody accepts everyone, all living together in peace, since: Wasn't the US created with those ideals (never mind African slaves...;-) ? Where all peop…

Is overpopulation the biggest threat to the world?

Thomas Robert Malthus was a reverend from the eighteenth century who foresaw the effects of a huge burgeoning world population. He thought it would be a catastrophe. It would take room, use up resources and create famine and pestilence. He proposed that measures needed to be taken in order to restri…

Is Religion defunct in this modern day and age?

The three Abrahamic religions started up way back in the dawn of time – in a time of medieval ignorance. Judaism has its roots 3000 years ago. Christianity 2000 years ago. Islam 1500 years ago. They originated in nomadic tribes of Arabs in a small area of the Middle East renowned for it…

Open Letter to Autumn and all Contributors

After defending a point in one of his articles against an absurdly irrational and rude attack on it, I recently commiserated with Robert Schneider in another comment below it as follows: "You're more than welcome, Howard. This site is becoming increasingly overwhelmed by a mindless horde of sna…

Too Big to Fail Again

Illinois is the latest financial crisis.  Speculation is that it will file for bankruptcy, even though it is not possible without congressional approval.  Congress granted Puerto Rico authority to file for bankruptcy.  Why not Illinois?  Why does it matter?Illinois is…

Hm. What do you see here ? Two or three ends ? Depends where you look from, right ?   The same thing happens when you say "I'm right, you're wrong". You look from the left, the other from the right, and - both are wrong - or right ?   Your "right", or point of view, is a combinatio…

Trump's Referendum

The Georgia congressional race was supposed to be a referendum of President Trump. The Democrats were so determined to get a foothold, some momentum, that they threw around $30 million into the race. They got nothing in return. The self-described party of the working class spent $30 million attempti…

Eisenhower's Death Camps Holocaust denier Meme #3

I'm feeling a bit lazy (again) so I thought I'd share with you something I wrote at Skeptics about "Eisenhower's Death Camps:   There is a subset of Holocaust denial that claims that the German POW camps set up in the Rhineland were "death camps" where, allegedly, a million German soldiers died…

Is Democracy Dead?

To me it appears that a small wealthy elite run the world. They buy the regime they want. In order for a candidate to be elected to office they have to attract enormous financial backing. This backing comes from political parties. The political parties are reliant on donors and in order to attract t…

Does History Repeat Itself?

Bush, the Iraq War and future wars

Let's make the country great (again)

It seems that every time a politician wants to appeal to a certain section of the electorate he starts to prate on about "Let's make the country great again".   Over the years we have heard this many times, from many politicians.  So I think it is a statement that is worth thinking about. …

Good Luck With Amazon, Whole Foods

Amazon has taken over Whole Foods. There is the lack of transparency in Amazon, and it is deliberate. Let’s first note that it is unethical (not to mention illegal) to restrict the free speech of employees when they are not on the clock. Of course, the media has to respect the firm in question…

Hello, can you you repeat that you're breaking up?

You're breaking up.  These are new words to my vocabulary since cell-phones have taken control. True, I couldn't call a friend in California from the subway in 1969 but I could have a crystal clear conversation when we did connect.  When I called someone I got an answer, a busy signal or t…
