An Open Letter to the American Press

[Note : The Boston Globe has convinced most major newspapers in the U.S. to write op-eds concerning Trumps “war on the press” this Thursday, August 16, 2018.  This would be my contribution to that effort.]   The founding fathers, I believe, considered the free press so essential to the survival of the Republic they considered it almost a fourth branch of government; a "fourth estate" if you will.  It is no accident that freedom of speech is protected in the Bill of Rights and equally no accident it is one of the first unalienable rights to be protected.  It's THAT important.   Protections in place, all was well; but who would ever have thought that the press would choose to abandon its esteemed place and responsibility?  Decades ago, the watchdog of politics and society voluntarily shacked itself …

The Truth, the Whole Truth and Nothing but the Tru…

We want the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth - and that is precisely the problem. In this post-truth era we are all in denial of the truth as presented to us by experts, the media and politicians. We don't believe any of it. Hence we go to sites we think we can trust because they ped…

What Rules the Rulers?

Aldous Huxley published Brave New World in 1932.  The novel describes a futuristic society that boasts a world government with the motto “Community, Identity, Stability.”  The year is After Ford 632, and babies are decanted rather than born.  Eugenics has been refined to t…

Manafort... What If

What if... the jury returns with a not guilty or even no verdict? What if... the judge's shenanigans are ignored with no reversal? What if... we have to accept that there is a large enough segment of people who are unwilling or just blind to any unlawful or unethical act to anything related to Trump…

In Support of Journalists and the Media

The veneer of civilization is thin. Those with the oratorical skill who are able to manipulate their audience into violently turning against the objects of derision, are deliberately pulling at a loose piece of veneer, caring not whether the veneer comes off and exposes the termite-infested …

Freedom? It's a Myth!

Well to start with we don't really possess a self in order to be free. Our self is a construct of our interactions so the very idea of freedom for such a construct is spurious.   But having said that a lot of us like the idea of freedom.    We don't like things being imposed on us. &#…

WHAT I LIKE ABOUT EUROPE

As people here know I'm European. Even though Switzerland is not in the EU (thankfully), and my nationality is Swiss, I define myself as an European. Why ? Because Europe is SMALL. And yes, dear Americans, I'm NOT a "Caucasian", because that mountain range is very far east where Asia meets E…

How did we get to Gay Marriage?

Marriage is an old and generally religious concept that is older than Christianity.  In all cultures marriages had rules, and those rules varied tremendously depending on when and where you are.  The rules and obligations are so different that even in the US a person who is married in one …

Yes Virginia, There is a God Who Speaks

St Paul writes "you should desire the special abilities the Spirit gives--especially the ability to prophesy." (1 Cor 14:1) For a Christian, prophesying is speaking out what God is speaking to them. Prophesying is normative.  The ability to prophesy is one of the most awesome experiences of bei…

TO ALL HATERS OF RUSSIA....

I stumbled onto that article by a Twitter link and thought I might read it. Then, I remembered how many Russia haters we find on WB, or at least people who think of it as an "enemy", as most Western media brand them (although I never gave a shit about simplifying stuff like that. I GO to places whe…

A demented president

The last time we had a demented president, he was a figurehead who took direction well, and the top of the hierarchy was the WH Chief of Staff. This time the president has as little awareness of the real world, but is not content to be a figurehead, because his particular flavor of dementia, his per…

In the Land of the Blind

There is an old saying that in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is King. There was also a guy a long place ago and in a time far away who reminded us daily that we knew a little bit, soon we would know “the rest of the story”. In the case of the one-eyed man in the land of the bli…

The question of capitalism v. socialism is the wrong question. I consider the question of personhood to be a "gray area" debate. That is, there is a range of changes between being a cell and being a person and it is arbitrary and pointless to debate about where exactly personhood begins. To claim, as some do, that a single cell has rights that trump a mother's …
