BY WHOSE DEFINITION
Many of us have now become aware of the complexity and problems with running a writer’s website. On the verge of either shutting down there has been a proposal to institute a so-called constitution which would incorporate rules and regulations for posting on this site. But let’s dig a little deeper.
- Blasphemous or obscene language.
- A swear word, an oath.
- Irreligious or irreverent behavior. Ungodliness, disrespect.
How many red flags are thrown up by these definitions? Does this mean that people who do not believe in God are banned from the site? Who will determine what a religion is?
Profanity- Definition according to Black’s Law dictionary. Centennial edition-1891-1991.
- Irreverence towards sacred things; particularly, an irreverent or blasphemous use of the name of God.
- Vulgar, irreverent or coarse language.
Personally I find war more profane than references to sex. In this regard and others I agree with Jeffrey Gilbert (Don’t fall out of your chair), anything posted on this site is fair game to anything. But I would add that death threats or threats of physical harm are strictly off limits. They are considered illegal by any rule of law.
As far as religious beliefs being profane does this mean that any Muslim who reads the Koran of any person of the Jewish persuasion reading the Torah, or Jenifer Frosts belief or Stone or even mine are banned from this site. But in that regard is it acceptable to state that a certain people’s should be rounded up in a certain location and nuked to eliminate their existence. Talk about pornographic. That is the ultimate.
If this site is to remain and exist then self censorship should be the forefront and the norm. But also remember the person posting always has the right to delete any comments they feel are inappropriate.
On a personal note I do not trust Ryan as an arbitrator. I view his article as his veiled attempt to hijack an already established site to meet his own ends. Just my perception.
