BY WHOSE DEFINITION

Many of us have now become aware of the complexity and problems with running a writer’s website. On the verge of either shutting down there has been a proposal to institute a so-called constitution which would incorporate rules and regulations for posting on this site. But let’s dig a little deeper.

Profanity- Definition

  • Blasphemous or obscene language.
  • A swear word, an oath.
  • Irreligious or irreverent behavior. Ungodliness, disrespect.

How many red flags are thrown up by these definitions? Does this mean that people who do not believe in God are banned from the site? Who will determine what a religion is?

Profanity- Definition according to Black’s Law dictionary. Centennial edition-1891-1991.

  • Irreverence towards sacred things; particularly, an irreverent or blasphemous use of the name of God.
  • Vulgar, irreverent or coarse language.

Personally I find war more profane than references to sex. In this regard and others I agree with Jeffrey Gilbert (Don’t fall out of your chair), anything posted on this site is fair game to anything. But I would add that death threats or threats of physical harm are strictly off limits. They are considered illegal by any rule of law.

As far as religious beliefs being profane does this mean that any Muslim who reads the Koran of any person of the Jewish persuasion reading the Torah, or Jenifer Frosts belief or Stone or even mine are banned from this site. But in that regard is it acceptable to state that a certain people’s should be rounded up in a certain location and nuked to eliminate their existence. Talk about pornographic. That is the ultimate.

If this site is to remain and exist then self censorship should be the forefront and the norm. But also remember the person posting always has the right to delete any comments they feel are inappropriate.

On a personal note I do not trust Ryan as an arbitrator. I view his article as his veiled attempt to hijack an already established site to meet his own ends. Just my perception.

I am not a fan of profanity, but my only real beef with it is that most of the problem language is directed at folks in a personal attack.  And honestly, if you can't get your thoughts across without being vulgar, maybe writing for public consumption is not for you.
Ric Wells Added Mar 6, 2017 - 3:55pm
Shane no.one has even addressed the fact that what is profane in one location region or country is acceptable in another. Perfect example is the use of the word bloody. Ok here entirely different meaning in England.
Ryan Messano Added Mar 6, 2017 - 3:56pm
And the lawless few on this site, are the strongest voices for perversion.  Expected.
Ryan Messano Added Mar 6, 2017 - 3:57pm
Not strong enough to destroy evil in themselves, they busy themselves by ensuring it's not destroyed anywhere else either.

And I agree, with Shane, grow up!!  If you can't avoid profanity, then fix yourself.

I've had a couple of stalkers - Michka and Willard Smitten a.k.a. "f.u." a.k.a. "delete me" harassed my articles and me quite a lot.  They are like demons that feed on negative energy, and they do their best to cultivate negative energy so that they continue to feed on it, parasitically.
Tom C. Purcell Added Mar 6, 2017 - 4:02pm
...it's our job to not feed them.
Shane Dean Added Mar 6, 2017 - 4:05pm
Obviously, there are regional and national differences between words that are considered profane.  However, it is pretty obvious, regardless of the local colloquialisms, when a person is being harassed in an inappropriate manner.  The exchange between Slade and Stone is a perfect example, where Slade was being threatening and deliberately hurtful, which had nothing to do with anything Stone wrote.  THAT is the kind of "profanity" that I think needs to go.

I could point to a lot of exchanges between Ryan and I that, while heated, neither of us sank to the Eff U Piss Off etc level.

Ric, all good points, as i am not of a chosen religion, nor am i really a writer here, i read most all articles comment when i can,I hit the like button when i like the article even if i don't leave a comment.
I have learned a lot from this site..and from some of what i consider some very good writers.
As i say live and let live, if all looked at things like this, it would be a much nicer peaceful world..
I like the comparison of what is acceptable in one country versus another.. Good one.

Donna all of us are writers here
You included. You have no problem expressing yourself clearly and very well. My opinion you junk a little confidence. Do not limit yourself you can only get better by writing. What's the worse that can happen? Someone may not like what you express or the way you express it. So what.

The problem is not lack of great writers. The problem is the samo problem seen over and over again.  If you are a Conservative your life becomes miserable in a very short time. I wrote on Yabberz for years I had gathered many many friends and I achieved 90,000 points given for your post. One day when I tried to open my account, I was blocked and not allowed to enter.
Autumn, is fair, I am not a polished writer. I quit high-school as a sophomore and went to work. Autumn should promote a better feeling for Conservatives who will stay with Writer Beat. a part of Writer Beat.
I hope Writer Beat-sticks around.
Ric Wells Added Mar 6, 2017 - 4:20pm
So Michael, what in your opinion is not polished about what you just expressed?
Donna Added Mar 6, 2017 - 4:26pm
Ric,
Thank you, and yes lack a little self confidence..True..something to work on..  ;)
Micahel-
i think you are a good writer..Polished is not something that makes you good, sometimes the raw
writer hits the beat with a much better article..

I do not like people who act as the thought police if you are offended by a post ignore the person I do that for the most part. If I find someone continues to do it I simply stop reading them. They have  a right to say it I also have the right to ignore it. We are supposed to be grownups people not 5 year olds who have hurt feelings because we do not like what someone says.

Writer Beat sets the rules and regulations, of course, and we have to abide by them!
EXPAT Added Mar 6, 2017 - 5:16pm
Well said Ric!
Just the thought of a Ryan Constitution has him acting like a Dictator and deleting anything he doesn't like.
Hypocrisy, thy name is Messano.

No we don't! There already are rules here against foul Language and personal  Attacks, but the are not enforced.
Prohibition didn't work either.

I share your perception Ric. I suggested he contact the Cote family and BUY the site, if he wants to run it!

Anyone exercising the self control over themselves that you refuse to exercise over yourself, Expat, is a dictator in your book.  In other words if someone isn't a profligate, whore chasing, debauchee, there is something wrong with them.  LOL.  So backwards.
EXPAT Added Mar 6, 2017 - 11:19pm
Ryan lives a life without sex, without drinking, without friends in the belief that when he is dead, GOD will give him eternal happiness.
If he wants to live a life of deprivation for Pie in the sky, and the sweet bye and bye, that's his choice.

But he wants to FORCE everyone else to live the same kind of masochistic lifestyle. That is why I call him an idiot. Because he cannot accept the life GOD has provided for him.

Usually when a coup d'état  fails executions follow. I expect that Ryan will go back to Facebook as soon as his suspension is over. He's not well received there either.

Ric, there's a cart and there's a horse- we've got to pick one to put in front. Looking at the situation, what I see right now is us talking our heads off without input from Autumn or her brother, who are really the ultimate decision makers on Writer Beat, or were until she announced her decision to quit. As much as trying to find solutions is a good thing (and we've had plenty of sensible ideas so far), what we think doesn't matter given that we don't own this site and those above ain't talking about what they want.

Mircea I jotted down your email address from another thread. If you wish I will email you so you have mine. Ric.

Ric, please do. I have a small list of friends to whom I send the stuff I write (a lot more than got published) and would gladly add you too.

Expat have to agree with your statement. From comments I received from Ryan he is more of a traditionalist  and god centered.

Being raised Roman Catholic seems to breed that out of you over time. My grandma said that I was a communist atheist who would burn in hell- a diehard catholic she was.

I do not like being dictated to by anyone I have also mentioned to several diehards who claim I am going to hell.

I will meet a more interesting group of people there.
