ARE YOU A BOT ?

My Recent Posts

Just watched a documentary about Fake News on ARD German television. And it's amazing what bots (electronically generated articles - and responses !) can do today in getting you directed into a certain direction.

I mean, you have your POV, and of course you look for like-minded people on the net which might have the same opinion as you. It's only natural. As in real life, you don't have the best pal in someone you think is an asshole.

You can, as I did, by mistake, put a comment onto a board which hailes the CIA, which I did some time ago. And my comment provoked replies which I've never seen here on WB (with one exception).

Now - what do I make of this ?

You write a comment of any sort, no matter which subject, and you will get proposals to join another group which is apparently in YOUR line. I got hotel tips for Thiès, Senegal, because I didn't dare to erase the cache of my browser and didn't log out. Huh ??

This has a fatal result:

That way, you'll automatically believe that the whole world is thinking like YOU. And this prevents you to see OTHER POV's neutrally, because as soon as you get into a circle you don't belong, you're first of all seen as a bot or as an enemy of state or an intruder - or propaganda bot....

They won't give you a chance because they're as intolerant as the ones who approve your POV. In your proposed circle you're accepted .... because ;-)

The net does NOT educate people. It hardens positions and makes people even more intolerant because all of them believe that they're right.

Why ?

Because the algorithms which are in the programming don't make a difference. You like the beach - ok, ads for beach holidays, and Facebook groups talking about beaches.

We should be aware of that. When you're not careful and watch out, the net prevents you to even think about other views.

It happened to me too. And I still have a hard time when I want to post a comment which doesn't fit into the general opinion of a user or a group which I only oppose on a certain topic. An opinion that does not fit into is booed automatically. No reflecting about it.

And I'm not ranting, because there I'm not on WB. ;-)

Then I wonder - who there is a bot and who isn't, and where does that lead to ?

Who is fake and who not ?

Shit. I guess one day I just throw my PC out the window.

I've noticed in the past month or so especially that Google is manipulating search results more aggressively. A lot of leftish websites are being shut out of the results.

Since I've known what Americans understand by "leftists" I'm not really sure what to think. Only thing I know that the net - the public US/EU part - is heavily tending towards what you call the "neoliberal" side. Which, in my view, has nothing to do with the original meaning of "liberal" as I knew it here in Europe.

But when I read reader's comments to that public media I have hope. Because 80% or so of the comments don't agree with the articles of the mass media...

One thing I can say about WB is there are no bots.  Now Medium, Wordpress or FB?  I love these stupid emails I get from the likes of FB telling me about a new "friend" or LI about a job I'm sure to "love."

Its nothing more than high grade spam. Yet I'm sure millions of fools will try to make a new "friend" or actually think signing up for LI's premium service will get them that unbelievable rewarding, high paying job.

30 years ago people screamed about junk mail.  Smart people simply threw it in the trash immediately.  Today people scream about the bots but just hit the delete button and avoid social sites that follow you around like a deranged nut case.

These bots communicate with you. It's not only Nigerian scam about "my dead father left a fortune and I need a bank account" or so anymore. Email is out. On FB you never know if the guy is real or not until you REALLY communicate with him.

Agreed Stone. I wrote many articles on this subject, but erased them.

The only way to prevent Google from profiling your searches is to clear your cookies weekly. I use CCleaner. It is free!
Also:  https://duckduckgo.com/ is free and does not profile.
It is your search cookies and Country of origin that determines the ranking of search results.
I am glad you are starting to distrust Google. It may lead you to a general distrust of anything from the Internet, as Stones article suggests.

Very interesting Stone. It would seem that these types of bots were used in an online campaign against race relations in South Africa over a period of months with very negative results:
https://www.timeslive.co.za/news/world/2017-07-20-watch-the-bell-pottinger-gupta-saga-captures-attention-of-world-media/

Most people thought these bots were real and it caused a lot of stress and anguish. There were real trolls involved too though.

This is one of the reasons why I simply don't do social media - it's a very very toxic environment that degrades human behaviours human behaviours which then spill over into real life.

"Shit. I guess one day I just throw my PC out the window."

Stone, the best thing we can do is throw our Political Correctness out the window as opposed to our computers.

It is group oriented political correctness more than anything causes resistance to opposing opinions or views and or a lack of response when something truly controversial comes up that turns general perceptions on its head. For example that all races have the ability to be equally oppressive or even fascist.

Some political topics are just too hot to comment on - even here on WB - so people revert to the more fluffy topics.

SEF - you are right again - we all group together into our little tribes of like-minded people and think that everybody thinks the same as us. Though I don't actually find that many.
I had this inkling that I might be a bot. But I did a thorough check and found I wasn't - I'm not sure about anybody else though!

Expat, your advice to John G is good and should be read and acted on by everyone. I have my computer set to delete cookies on shutdown, but some are 'sticky' and need to be cleared manually.

BTW people, did you know 60% of hits on web ads these days is bots. Google, the other tech corporations and mainstream media are desperately trying to cover it up because of everyone did what Proctor and Gamble just did and cancelled their web advertising budget because the medium is so ineffective, revenue streams would dry up. But think about that, if 60% of ad hits are bots that means around the same percentage of page hits are not real readers.

I'm off to work on my article about how advertising online is a waste of money right now.

SEF - I wrote an article about this a couple years back:
http://writerbeat.com/articles/7682-You-Are-Your-Search-Engine
This is really becoming an issue, and became especially apparent around the time of the US election. These algorithms have been tuned even more and are being applied virtually everywhere from Google, Bing, Facebook, LinkedIn, and even on Samsung "smart TV's", Amazon Alexa, and even on some of the new generation refrigerators that keep track of what you purchase and use.
A US company named Three Square Market has just started implanting microchips into their employees, so our ignorance has led to this:

These algorithms have processed to the point that even personal comments concerning the person as such are hardly recognizable as bots. Since we don't know the opposite in person, everything is possible. I go for "the shorter and more unpersonal" the likier a bot :)

I must say I've never had any trouble finding sites that express viewpoints different from mine.  Yes, it takes a little effort to seek them out, but that's true of anything.  Maybe it's because I don't "do" social media like Facebook or Twitter.

It's necessary because the only way to understand the opposition is to see what they say in their own words, not as paraphrased by one's own side.

Most of the time, when I read what right-wingers have to say, it just confirms that they're hopelessly confused and out of touch with reality -- but at least I'm getting it from their own words, not from how somebody else describes their words.  And I'm not at any risk of ever believing that everyone else thinks the same as I do.

Thanks for joining in, but your mentioning of right-wingers already show a tendency. I don't see it from an ideologic standpoint but simply when looking at reality. And there all right/left or others have a point. It depends on the subject ;-)
