Jesus and the Hurricane

I was looking for a news program yesterday morning and came across a Houston preacher (Joel somebody or other) and he was retelling the story of Jesus asleep in the apostles' boat on the Sea of Galilee during a terrible storm.

Joel told the story to suggest that the people complaining about the recent hurricane in Texas were not true Christians. They were somehow failed Christians who didn't really believe in what Jesus was offering.

There was no sympathy that I could see in this preacher for the victims of the hurricane.

He's standing around in a $1000 suit on national TV and he dares to tell people suffering from a hurricane that they are somehow bad, weak, or stupid.

I found out later that this was Joel Osteen, proponent of the Prosperty Gospel, the belief that the good people get money from God and the bad people get a hurricane.

opher, from Time to Time over the last 40 years since I started to believe, I asked Jesus about turning water into wine with no reply. I still believe. For me, I've learned it's on a need to know basis with the Eternal. It is good enough to get the Priorities straight with what is known.

Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say to you, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
Marvel not that I said to you, You must be born again.
The wind blows where it will, and you hear the sound of it, but can't  tell from where it comes, and where it goes: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

John, Joel Osteen had to be shamed into opening his mega Church to those refugees from the flood.

I think those so called Christian Prosperity Preachers missed the message in these words of Christ;
And he looked up, and saw the rich men casting their gifts into the treasury.
And he saw also a certain poor widow casting in there two mites.
And he said, Of a truth I say to you, that this poor widow has cast in more than they all:
For all these have of their abundance cast in unto the offerings of God: but she of her penury has cast in all the living that she had.

Human standards fall short of God's standards.

The "good Christians" claim women endure pain in childbirth because of her sin (she gave Adam a piece). They say the 911 attack was caused by the wickedness of the nation. They say the recent floods were ascribed to the nation''s embrace of homosexuality.  These good Christians pray for the day God will come and destroy America and all the wicked people, including their mothers, fathers, and children who did not accept Jesus. I am wondering if we should send all our good Christians to north Korea.

RUSH LIMBAUGH: HURRICANES ARE A “LIBERAL” CONSPIRACY
Rush Limbaugh is convinced that hurricanes are a liberal conspiracy since they happen to hit large population centers that are on the coasts of the United States.  Mr. Limbaugh thinks it’s suspicious that hurricanes tend to hit locations nearer to the ocean rather than locations farther from it.
Mr. Limbaugh believes members of the government and retailers are pushing hurricanes in order to advance a pro-climate change agenda according to the Daily Beast.
“There is a desire to advance this climate-change agenda,” Mr. Limbaugh said, “and hurricanes are one of the fastest [ways] to do it.”
He continued “you have people in all of these government areas who believe man is causing climate change, and they’re hell-bent on proving it, they’re hell-bent on demonstrating it, they’re hell-bent on persuading people of it.”
Limbaugh added: “Unlike UFOs, which only land in trailer parks, hurricanes are always forecast to hit major population centers.  He hypothesized that “Because, after all, major population centers [are] where the major damage will take place and where we can demonstrate that these things are getting bigger and they’re getting more frequent and they’re getting worse. All because of climate change.”

John, do you know what gives Christianity such a bad name? Christians. Christians like that self-serving AH Joel Osteen. The wealth cult is nothing new. It comes out of the Protestant concept of predestination, that if you are meant to be rich, God will make you rich, all you have to do is believe hard enough. So if you fail, it's because you didn't believe hard enough, so believe harder and try again. It is an ignorant, self-serving philosophy that leads to all kinds of rip offs from blessed prayer towels selling for a hundred, to the idea that you have to give more to the man here to get the big man upstairs to notice your commitment to the faith.

People like Joel Osteen pander to the worst calling of our characters, that the reason for existing is to attain wealth for yourself to prove something to those around you, that you're blessed. Christ said, blessed are the poor for they shall know the kingdom of Heaven. If that's true, you can certainly figure out where Joel Osteen will end up. Sharing a cell with Jimmy Swaggert for eternity is what I predict.

FYI, Joel did open his church, after people shamed him.  The problem was he needed time to put plastic covers on the carpeting, and seats so they didnt get dirty.

Seriously, Joel has done pretty well for himself considering he never studied the ministry, except for running the TV camera for his Dad, when his Dad did his TV ministry.   Joel has written a number of books each of which has made millions, and is one of those preachers who thinks that Jesus wants us to be rich,  like Joel.

He is a pretty fair piece of work, and has taken TV preaching to the next level, as they say in business.

Mattress Mack isnt as wealthy as Joel, but he opened his furniture store, and had people sleeping on his merchandise.  He also fed them and gave them clothes, no mention if Joel was serving anything to eat as his place.

Being a Man of God, I visited with The Salvation Army Major assigned to the Institution frequently. After one of our discussions, he laid these words on my ears, "I'll pray God Bless your Apostleship."

I went on a fast all the Time I was in jail. In those Days, you could request a Oil Paint By Number canvas to paint supplied for Free. You could also order at a cost from your canteen money, the more expensive Black Velvet type paintings.

John G. Single payer flood insurance doesn't seem to be all that controversial, is brilliant. Why? Because there's no way to make a profit in flood insurance in this current environment. Without government help the premiums would be unaffordable for most people. So the smart money becomes agents selling the policies, not worrying about whether the policy makes sense, just taking a commission and letting the taxpayers take all of the risk. Similar to what happened with Credit Default Swaps during the financial crisis, with mortgages backed by Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac.

I'm sure if some such arrangement could be made in regard to healthcare the insurance companies, the AMA, and all parties, except the malpractice lawyers, would jump on it, because limits on litigation would surely be part of the deal.
john guzlowski Added Sep 8, 2017 - 4:38pm
Dr. Rupert Green, trickle down economics -- Reagan's baby -- had it that if the government made it easy for the rich folks to make money with tax cuts and such, they would then spend money.  When they would spend money, some of it would eventually trickle down to us the poor folks.

Trickle Down Grace works sort of the same way, I guess.  God gives grace and gifts and good things to certain fortunate people and they in turn allow some of that goodness to come trickling down to them.  For example, if Joel Osteen is given a prosperous life by God, he will be happy and will let others share in that happiness.  When we see him smile, we will want to smile too.

GOD PERSON

Hey, God person
What you create today?
and where the hell were you yesterday
Telling me I would be more successful
and happier being your way
But I'm not complaining

What are you going to do about the starving?
Will you bother to show them how?
They don't have the donations
I have to offer

On the last day
When God asks you,
How are you going to say?
What mountains have you moved?
What storm have you tamed?
Have you helped others
or have you just helped yourself?
Receiving fame from the fools who follow you
They're just as blind as you

I'm not understanding why.
People aren't watching clouds pass by
Birds flying high
Trees don't grow
When they bow down
to people like you.
Veins of the path lie beneath the skin,
If people would just look within.
The grass we walk on
Without caring to see
Can show us about you and me.
Look eye to eye,
and see every side of a round world.
Each truth has a different color,
All colors feel differently,
Each feeling has a path
Going the same direction
Reaching up.
We can reach out
Learning what it's all about.
Darkness is seeing your own hunger,
And not caring about another.
With hearts shut off and turned inward,
We can't look at the pain of another
Without understanding.
We just hurt each other,
But you are taken care of
Aren't you?
With your heart drunken with all their attention
Your pockets filled with all their money
You're a happy successful man
At peace, giving yourself to God
You're rewarded for sharing with us the plan
Bullshit
you have only given yourself to vanity man
Looking up to you to fill their hunger
They're too blind to see the scam

I'm not one to criticize
God knows I'm no perfect man
But I do claim to understand
You want to follow Jesus
Give all you own to the poor
and wear the shoes of the homeless
Jesus had nothing
and showed us everything
He truly belonged to the Father
Didn't have to bother asking for anything
Without the help of broadcasting equipment
His words reached around the world
Under many tons of pressure
He sweat tears of blood
He did
But you don't
He cared
You won't
To claim you follow him
Isn't fair
You want to help
Stop taking our money
Stop putting us down
Jesus didn't
And you shouldn't
Without knowing the name of the son of man
Buddha followed his words more than you
Won't you be surprised when Jesus says to you
I never knew you

Blessed is the one who tries to follow the way of Jesus
But isn't always able to
Cursed is the one who tells us to
But doesn't
Forgiving us of our sins
Who's going to forgive you?

Jesus had no credit account
Retirement fund
or limousine to take him about
Without all that
You say he saved the world
or did he just save you?
Preaching his words
You've obtained all that
When are you going to give it back?
There's only so much to go around
Why should you have all that?
Who's going to save the poor from you?
We don't need more people like you.

Do you really know the truth?
Do you care
Do you really want to help
Doing the work of the gospel?
Stop your preaching
Pay your taxes like Jesus told you to
Get down here
and help out

Have you ever wondered why Jesus was a friend
to your sinners?
Why he was an enemy
to yo

John, trickle down economics is not Reagan's idea. Besides, if the workers were paid more, their spending would do more to expand the economy than the rich spending more on luxuries.

Trickle down economics was the issue in 1896, identified by William Jennings Byran who gave a speech with these lines in it,
"There are two ideas of government. There are those who believe that if you just legislate to make the well-to-do prosperous, that their prosperity will leak through on those below. The Democratic idea has been that if you legislate to make the masses prosperous their prosperity will find its way up and through every class that rests upon it."

Here it is 121 years later with the same unresolved debate.

Ray, thanks for the history lesson but I still associate Reagan with the trickle down economy.  I'm a big fan of WJ Bryan but nobody but you and me remember him.

Here's what the Wiki site says about Trickle Downism:

"Trickle-down economics", also referred to as "trickle-down theory", is a term associated with laissez-faire capitalism in general and more specifically supply-side economics. The term is often used to criticize economic policies which favor the wealthy or privileged, while being framed as good for the average citizen.
In recent history, the phrase has been used by critics of supply-side economic policies, such as "Reaganomics". David Stockman, who as Reagan's budget director championed Reagan's tax cuts at first, but then became critical of them, told journalist William Greider that the "supply-side economics" is the trickle-down idea: "It's kind of hard to sell 'trickle down,' so the supply-side formula was the only way to get a tax policy that was really 'trickle down.' Supply-side is 'trickle-down' theory."[1][2] Political opponents of the Reagan administration soon seized on this language in an effort to brand the administration as caring only about the wealthy.[3]
Multiple studies have found a correlation between trickle-down economics and reduced growth, and that higher taxes on the wealthy are linked to economic growth.[4][5][6][7] Trickle-down economics has been widely criticised particularly by left-wing and moderate politicians and economists, but also some right-wing politicians.

Trickle down economics has come so a screeching halt as all the stats, facts and figures show economic inequality is INCREASING, NOT DECREASING.

On reflection, I may agree with you on this in the purest sense of the wording, "After 121 years the issue IS NOT RESOLVED YET!" and you replied, "There's nothing about trickle down economics that's "unresolved."

It is resolved in the sense, if "There are two ideas of government. There are those who believe that if you just legislate to make the well-to-do prosperous, that their prosperity will leak through on those below. The Democratic idea has been that if you legislate to make the masses prosperous their prosperity will find its way up and through every class that rests upon it."

The prosperous have succeeded in having legislation that makes the prosperous even more prosperous, aka, making the rich richer and the poor poorer.
