I just can't stop ranting!

My Recent Posts

I am so fed up with the direction our country is going!  And it is all the result of one man's impact on a gullible segment of our population, many of whom have frustrations of their own and have fallen prey to a charismatic dictator.  THE MOST IMPORT THING FOR THOSE OF US WHO WANT TO BRING BACK CIVILITY AND RESTORE THE DREAM THAT ALL MEN AND WOMEN ARE CREATED EQUAL AND HAVE VALUE is for each of us to speak out and join  together in following constructive ways to combat the evil that has overtaken the executive branch of government.

Here are two suggestions that come to mind.

  1. Take a lesson from the master of the use of the media, Donald J Trump. He has effectively used provocative monikers to describe his opponent – lyin', little, low-energy, crooked, crazy and goofy. I know it can be perceived as taking the low road with him, but I think we should find the ONE best adjective that describes him?  I've got lots to offer including windbag, blowhard, big mouth, know-it-all, showboat and motor mouth. What's yours?
  2. While Trump continues to bash all the traditional media, we must unite in supporting journalists and the true Free Press! I marvel each day at the miracle of having a newspaper at my doorstep early each morning. I know many, including friends, who in the past have felt the media have worked to maintain the status quo. But I find most mainstream of media to at least attempt to purvey the truth with some balance. The paper I read, while perhaps having a well-known bias, at least attempts to include editorials and reports from various points of view. In-depth articles of critical events are not subject to the rantings of one individual generally, but are the studied report of trained group of investigative reporters. They even respond to criticism and admit mistakes.
  • While many of us are fascinated by the information we can receive instantly via the Internet, I sincerely believe that all who value a Free Press, should subscribe and actually participate in the local newspaper through support and criticism including letters to the editor
  • And once again I am eager to share with readers an article in yesterday's Washington Post (7/2).

"Love Thy Neighbor" is another dramatic story I wish EVERYONE could read. It's in today's Washington Post (7/2) and tells the story of a doctor coming to a small town in southwest Minnesota. He is warmly received and welcomed as a leader - until Trump is elected president. The only thing that hasn't changed is that he continues to worship Allah! Now his and his whole families' world changes.

What a price our country is paying for electing Trump as our president. He has shown us how much PREJUDICED OUR CITIZENS ARE AGAINST THE PERCEIVED "OTHER."

Of course minorities have known that for a long, long time.

How is Trump's America any different than Obama's America? Nothing is getting done legislatively! Executive orders and regulations have yet to be implemented, and health care, taxes, immigration. and WAR are still totally screwed up.

I have yet to see anything good this man has done, and please spare me the grossly overused Paris Accord, Immigration, Fake news mongering and the rest of nothing, as if these were all great things. Nothing he has or will do will help the middle class or the poor.

There will be no rational discourse from the "Progressives".  Their entire premise is based on inciting and promoting anything that divides Americans - whether it is income, race, religion, geography.

It used to be that the debates between Democrats and Republicans revolved around things that were subjective (e.g. how much to spend on one government program versus another).  Both parties respected the Constitution and attempts to bypass or ignore it using non-legislative branch means like the Judicial Branch legislating from the bench or the Executive Branch bypassing Congress using Executive Orders were rare.  These tactics have become commonplace and are on display in the Democratic platform.

According to the Propaganda Arm of the Democratic Party (the mainstream media), things like upholding the Constitution and limiting the power of the Federal Government as described in the Constitution are now "Radical Ideas".  People practicing Opposition Free Speech are now openly attacked by Democrats on college campuses - even at the birthplace of the "Free Speech Movement".  The mother of a black child murdered in Chicago is only paid attention to when the child is killed by a white police officer.

We are in a war for the soul of our nation.  One group wants the Constitution followed and enforced.  The other group wants the Constitution treated like an irrelevant relic of the past to be displayed in a glass case and ignored in practice to produce an ever growing, more powerful central government.  You have to pick a side - there's no riding the fence anymore!

@Ron. "What a price our country is paying for electing Trump as our president. He has shown us how much PREJUDICED OUR CITIZENS ARE AGAINST THE PERCEIVED "OTHER."

President Trump has been good for Democracy and the advancement of our country.
He has informed an apathetic people of the importance of one vote.  He has revised interest in politics, shows the benefit of understanding the electoral process, and the wisdom of the founding fathers in setting system in place to foil would be dictators.

As a Republican, I will assert that President Trump provide evidence he has dictatorial inklings. However, though he is smart in giving diction, he is not smart in the ways of dictatorship and, thus, he is helping the US advance its Democratic Ideals.

A good dictator would find ways to get the press in bed as George Bush did. He inbeded the press and impregnated it with the germs to become agents of the government, as did yahoo, Google, and other corporations.  A good dictator would take the guns away from the people.  Obama tried that, and the more he tried, the more guns he sold. However, he was good at taking away the people's rights and controlling the mainstream press with sweet words.

President Obama had a smother approach to dictatorship than President Trump. Trump lambaste the press, Obama tells it sweet lies and had it wake up the next morning feeling that something incestuous had occurred, but could not explain how it happened. However,  He failed at becoming a dictator because Americans dared him to take their guns out of their cold dead hands.

What am I saying is, because of Trump's dictatorial buffoonery in telegraphing his intent (I am glad), Congress has been able to strengthen laws to prevent dictator minded individuals, who are smart in such ways, from taking over America. There is a next point.

Empires rise, reache a point of inflection, then a critical point, then bein to fall.  What is happening now is a dust out in America as it enters one of the points.  Still, the forest needs fire to rejuvenate.

The racism being spawned was there before Trump. He is facilitating ways for people to express themselves. Having to be politically correct and not say the shit they want to say, people are using the opportunity to say their piece. It is good not to store up anger. So now that all the angry shit is out there, we can now address Asian shit, Black shit, Latino shit, White shit, Native American shit, happy shit, Republican shit, and Democratic shit.

But I would like to begin by quoting The Rev William H. Lamar IV of DC's Metropolitan AME Church in the POST where there are these two quotes:
"Pastor ties U. S. political discord to 'theoloogical malpractice'"
and his statement
"Christian faith in America is a sentimentalized expression of personal piety. Jesus has become the doorman who opens the portals of eternity."
And what might be your reactions.

Ron,

We all believed that the election of Trump was just a tragic error.  And, of course, for many it was.  Moderate republicans are recoiling from Trump's presence in horror.  But far too many seem to admire him or even believe in him.  The Trumpies on this forum don't really seem to be over-the-top racist/xenophobe/fascist...  Unless I miss my guess, they are ordinary, respectable people who love their families and contribute to society.  In a way, it is far more difficult to accept that these people actually support him than to accept Donald as president.  Because that deflates any hope for reconciliation.

This is a funny thread.  Mike laments the days when republicans and democrats worked together to balance the needs of various sectors of our society for the common good.  Forging good policy and fair laws and regulation.  Politicians of both parties respected the constitution...

But instead of seeing the republican train go wildly off its tracks, he sees the democratic party, progressives and liberals as going quite horribly astray.  I guess it all just depends on where you are standing.

Ron, in one sentence you got quite a few things wrong.

1.  Trump's election is not only because of the things he has done.  It is also because the political establishment of both parties have ignored the voters for too long.  HRC promised us more of the same, and people dont want more of the same.

2. Trump is not a dictator.  Tell me how he has violated the Constitution, and thrown away our rights ?

3. Trump can say what he wants about the Press, but last time I checked they still have the same rights as when he was elected.  All Presidents have criticized the Press.  Trump's criticism is just a bit less tactful.

4. 87% of the US counties voted in favor of Trump.  That gullible segment you speak about is pretty widespread, and constitutes half of the voters in the last election.  I think there is more going on than a few people got fooled.

One problem is, we had the choice between two lying, narcissistic sociopaths, Hillary arugably the worst of the two. Either that or throw our votes away on third-party candidates, or not vote at all. But the real power behind the Executive are all the bureaucracies, especially those of the national security apparat, and voting for its chief doesn't change anything.
The other problem is, is that all media outlets are literally telling us WHAT and HOW to think. From Rachel Maddow on the left to Sean Hannity on the right. Not a one tells the unvarnished truth. We are being lied to!
And regarding your quote of The Rev William H. Lamar IV of DC's Metropolitan AME Church: "Christian faith in America is a sentimentalized expression of personal piety. Jesus has become the doorman who opens the portals of eternity." This has awlays been so with very few exceptions--notably those few churches that joined the Abolitionist movement in the runup to the War Between the States and those other few churches that organized (black) or joined (white) the Civil Rights movement.

I sincerely appreciate your well considered response to my rant. I agree with much of what you have to say, and I feel it unfortunately reflects the sad malaise that permeates much of our frustrated society.
Yet I feel we can succumb to the attitude of calling a glass half-full or half-empty (it may feel now that it is totally empty). Having lived through almost a century, I feel fortunate that my lifelong opportunities have enabled me to see good developing – and I feel it comes from associating with young people. Thus I reject the moniker that was given to my generation as, "The Greatest Generation". How can we be called that when we permitted what happened to the Japanese, our failure to more completely aid to Jewish people and our subjugation of African Americans for so many years. How we glorified in sexism and a host of other "sins".
I see a new awakening of idealism, but feel it is often too impatient and looks only at the dark side. I've been trying to talk about these for some time, and am thankful for the responses I've received recently.
Let me give a few reactions to your thoughts
1. Certainly the journalistic media is not perfect. But I find thoughtful articles and thinking by often a group of journalists looking to follow truths. Certainly the alt right feels NPR contains only liberal voices, but they never give evidence of this. I truly believe there is an attempt to follow stories in depth.  I find the "considered" media far superior to the individual thought of those with their biases.

2. While I understand the distain that many people had for both candidates, an objective look at the lifelong trajectories and values of Hillary – not to mention her at least acquaintance with worldwide situations - made her a far superior candidate to Donald. One need look no further than his crude, harmful and divisive statements in which he would use any means including lying and distorting to satisfy his ego is beyond my comprehension of how inadequate we are in educating voters to the complexity of the world
3. I completely join you in throwing brickbats at churches so long committed to tradition and hypocrisy. Yet in my century I've seen great change in the world – particularly in our country to becoming more enlightened and much of it has been through religious leaders. Yet how far we are from living up to the ideals of what this strange man in history – Jesus – espoused. I fully believe, and some of my next writings, hopefully, I'll have time, will be on the spiritual – if you please – dimension of life that so many in the world crave.  What is the purpose and meaning of life.Thomas Jefferson stated that within 100 years all America would be Unitarian. By that I think he was pointing to the fact that we would become enlightened enough to know that religions, mostly led by Christianity, speak in terms of similes and metaphors. To me what religion is all about is love and keeping and sharing and developing this wonderful mysterious world – and rejecting the notion that there is a heaven or a God as taught by most religions and that WE alone have the WAY.
And these are just a few thoughts off the top of my head. I hope you stayed with me and that we can continue in meaningful dialogue with you and others.  At 91 I have so much I want to dialogue about.

Ron, it looks like you missed the big story of this election.  It was not about the resume.  The voters desperately wanted something different, being tired of the lies and corruption of Washington.  HRC is part of that, and openly promised us more of the same, as did 15 of the GOP candidates that Trump defeated.

Bernie wasnt even a Democrat until he ran for President.  He did surprisingly well because people wanted change, and he represented that.

How else can you explain a Republican winning in Michigan?  how else can you explain Trump winning 87% of the counties?

Trump was not an ideal candidate.  His disapproval ratings were very high.  But he as not associated with the traditional party leaders, so he got the votes.  HRC still doesnt know why she lost, and maybe never will since she seems intent on blaming others.

Oh, I beg to differ. Even though what you said about Donald Trump's character is correct, still there are serious flaws in Hillary's character. For example, her remark "We came, we saw, he died" upon her hearing of the death of Moammar Gaddafi shows a callousness on her part thst is very off-putting. Then there's Hillary opening herself to charges of corruption when it was revealed that she had taken several hundred thousand dollars per speech in speaking fees for talks with Wall Streeters... the upper management of Goldman Sachs, for example. Then there is that big stink over the DNC hacking the 2016 Democratic primaries against Bernie Sanders ... for Hillary's benefit, of course. And I'm sure there's more, too.

Well this Russia Gate business has certainly detracted from the credibility when for weeks on end there was nothing but "Russia, Russia, Russia!" going on all the time, implicating that Russia indeed succeeded in hacking the election in favor of Donald J. So far what has been proven was that DJT Jr., Paul Manafort and Jared Kushner met with private sector Russians seeking opposition research on Hillary... and instead getting an earful about the 2012 sanctions imposed by the US Govt under Obama.

My explanation has to do with chronology.  As each term (progressive, leftist, liberal, etc.) becomes associated with one government/economic failure after another, these people simply change their name from "Liberal" to "Progressive" - hoping that ignorant voters will think this group is something new and different when it isn't.

It's exactly the same tactic as the "Global Warming" frauds used when none the 40 years of "Imminent Global Warming Disaster Forecasts" materialized, so they renamed their cause "Climate Change".  That way no matter what the climate does (warm up - cool off) they can claim their were "right"!  It's just another version of "heads I win, tails you lose"!!!

Mike, liberal is an umbrella term that includes everything from essentially centrist neoliberals (which is what most democrats are), think Hillary Clinton and Chuck Schumer. Progressives are the actual left, people like Tulsi Gabbard and Bernie Sanders. Socialists aren't represented in national America politics, neither are communists. The alt left, like the alt right are extremists (mostly communists and fascists respectively).

doesn't hold water.  Bernie Sanders calls himself a Socialist.  He isn't a member of the Democratic Party, yet he ran as a Democrat for President.  The reason for the big "umbrella" is because the social programs implemented by "Liberals" have been an abysmal failure and people try to disassociate themselves from the failures while surreptitiously seeking the votes of people who don't know any better.
