Best Holiday Covers or Originals? Then or Now...

In a jump off of TBH’s article, its that time of year again.  I like music period, but Being a Single mom, Christmas was sometimes depressing with two kids who wanted everything either expensive and/or trendy and no bottomless resource in which to draw from. Also my family was either far away, deployed or ill.  So I had certain music sources that got me through the holidays.   Now its not so bad, but I love my holiday music.  Enjoy.

There are several Christmas CDs I listen to, but I have favorites of course.  My favorite and one I cant hang onto..people love to “borrow it” and I just replace it every year is Santa Clause; It’s a Punk Rock Christmas.  There are two versions.  I like the first one.  Not number 2. Some are covers and some arent..and there are so many more of these, PUNK does Christmas a Corporate capitalist holiday, like no one else. LOL...

Actually..I think this is a link for the one I like, but 12 days of Christmas is one of the best.
worth giving a listen.. some of it if you EVER listened to punk you should remember the items in the list.

Other music memorable’s in recent years are.. The Most Wonderful Time of Year by Scott Weiland, full album..    Its really classical, surprising.

Bright Eyes- Blue Christmas is the Album, but it is all classics and they are all done in a classic tone.  Refreshing..    I think this is all of it but if not, take a gander at their version of White Christmas or Little Drummer Boy.

Here is one from 2009- might be up your alley, has everyone from Randy Travis to The Used on it…it’s a decent compilation for variety. Its called  Gift Wrapped; 20 songs that keep on Giving!    I think this is all of them.  Brian Setzer is on here..doing the Grinch song..Outstanding.

Holidays Rule Either Volume 1 or 2…here is volume 2   I cant find a bad song on the entire cd.  Its good, but you expect that from McCartney who makes an appearance on Wonderful Wintertime with Jimmy Fallon.    Volume 1 is here..    I liked 2 better but they are both good.

Vandals Oi! To the your Christmas presents to this on Christmas day, super cool.

A 2015 version of Punk going Christmas –full album..its alright.

A She and Him Christmas..seems to be a popular one.  I have never heard it.  What I heard is good though>

Also Weezers 6 song take on Jesus at holiday time. Closest I could come->

Then there are the classic rock favs

Perhaps the one we may know the best;  A Very Special Christmas 1987 ( the original with Mellencamp and Springsteen)    There is a 1992 version with even more artists but its not as good…

Beach boys Christmas Album (1964)

Elvis Christmas Album (1957)

A Little Christmas Gift to You from Phil Spector (1963) might be one of the top Christmas classics in pop.

There are Motown..jazz..funk and blues I didn’t get into, but Ill let you guys do that.  So I can hear them I didn’t want to do compilations on those and I have been listening to Christmas music for about 4 hours now.   So its your turn...Tell me what is your best?

I grew up listening to Elvis' Christmas Album. Makes me think of my mother, she listened to it non stop after Thanksgiving. It reminds me of  all the goodies she would make for us on the holiday. Thank you so much for mentioning it.

Somehow anybody doing Christmas stuff leaves me cold. It just always sounds so cheesy and false - like that Motown Christmas album.

Thank you Mike..I love Nat King Cole.
My Dad was a big Dean Martin fan... didnt he used to have a show or something?  Or maybe it was Sammy Davis that had the show...I know one of them did.
Anyhow..Dean and Frank. My father I grew up listening to them.
My mother liked Tom Jones and Engelbert Humperdinck.

wsucram (do you have a first name we can go by?)
Yes, Dean Martin had a variety comedy show and it is shown periodically on cable networks - he was a great comedian and singer.  Sammy and Frank were frequent guests on Dean's show.
Tom Jones was a HUGE hit and his TV show did very well.  I saw him perform in London for Her Majesty's Golden Jubilee - gray haired but could still pound out "It's Not Unusual".

Thanks Jeanne!  We don't "argue" . . . it's more like flirting or sizing each other up before we play "HORSE" in the driveway.
