Only Seen in Darkness

Headlights that dance along the wires

Racing at you in the night

Ghosts of quiet memories

That reside in abandoned general stores

Living on the road to nowhere

Supplicants come bearing fruits

Seeking favor before their idols

The dance of jesters before empty crowns

No promise they can fulfill

All leave Shangri-La empty handed

For destinations unknown

Shangi-La, the palace of plastic thrones
The mythical Nirvana, unattainable
Grasp at air, take away nothing
Come with nothing leave with nothing
But the experience....

My humble thanks to a man who I esteem not for his acquisition of material, rather for his experience :)

Perhaps they're leaving nowhere bound for Shangri-La?

The "abandoned general stores" line made me think of the time I passed through West Virginia almost 30 years ago... the place was full of them.

One could make a book, perhaps a photo journal, of these many places and perhaps provide the background of these places, describing what they were when they had been open and how they came to be abandoned

over the years I have traveled widely throughout the Midwest and great Lakes region. we are littered with places like these, old stores or buildings that have stood in the same state for as long as I've been on the road

TBH - there were a lot in Mississippi that looked like they were straight out of the thirties - very picturesque.

Did you get a chance to see any "barn advertising"?  There are barns here and there throughout the country which have been emblazoned with an advert for Mail Pouch chewing tobacco.  Long since stopped doing this, but there are many still about. They've become something rather iconic

TBH - Oh yes - I saw a lot of Barn advertising and the old Blues joints, and the Blues guys graves and markers. We had a great time.
