The Beat Goes on XXIII

My Recent Posts

I received a few complaints recently about my selection criteria for which articles to promote.  So I thought it would be helpful if I restated the criteria in the order it matters to me:

1) Recent articles.  Anything more than 48 hours old, will not be promoted.

2) Authors that comment on the work of others.

3) Authors that have a track record of engaging his or her commenters.

4) Nicely formatted, grammatically sound articles.

5)  Non-racist, comment inducing articles.

By way of example, the two articles I most recently promoted are below:

Robert Owen - A Pioneer of Socialism by opher goodwin

Bill of Rights..a Discussion on the Law by wsucram15

I just read in your profile that Writer Beat is the place for long-winded commenters.  Ha ha.

Guilty as charged.

I can't remember, how did you stumble upon the site?
Tom C. Purcell Added Feb 22, 2018 - 11:27am
Booo Hisss.  The Bill of Rights article is on the right track but the commie article is weak propaganda.

Autumn, you forgot to say that no matter how technically, grammatically sound and well-supported an article is, that if it's deemed to be about 'the holocaust' or some other scary topic for all we know, it will not be promoted.  It's your site and do as you wish, I'm just adding to the transparency in your theme here.
TexasLynn Added Feb 22, 2018 - 11:56am
Autumn, how exactly are these articles promoted?  A link to the promotion would foster better understanding that the link to WB.

Is anybody else getting a 404 error when clicking on these links?
Autumn Cote Added Feb 22, 2018 - 12:56pm
Tom,
The content of the article matters very little in terms of what articles I promote.  That being said, I'm not going to promote Holocaust articles because the comment thread always gets really ugly.

Lynn,
Promoted articles are emailed to the list of dormant accounts.  I define dormant as any account not logged into for 48 hours.  I've promoted several of your articles in the past.
Autumn Cote Added Feb 22, 2018 - 12:57pm
Lynn,
I'm not sure why those links aren't working...weird.
Autumn Cote Added Feb 22, 2018 - 1:00pm
I meant to say "any account not logged into for a week (not 48-hours.)"
Tom C. Purcell Added Feb 22, 2018 - 1:08pm
You mean, 'Tom, I'm not going to promote Holocaust articles because it's scares soft minds and it hurts delicate feelings.' ... or perhaps 'I'm not going to grow and promote WriterBeat because it's scary.'

WriterBeat has potential but you choose to keep it in a cage.  I just don't get it but good luck.

Ahhh... now I know what "promoted" means.  OK

Thank you.

'Tom, I'm not going to promote Holocaust articles because it's scares soft minds and it hurts delicate feelings.'-Maybe Autumn got weary of hearing "I'd like to do things on Writerbeat, but it's full of Nazis." It's Autumn's site, not yours Tom.

I get the email about once a week, with gaps.  For example, nothing in January.  Seems to have little to do with when I log in.
Tom C. Purcell Added Feb 22, 2018 - 1:14pm
Get over it, Michka the Feuder.  Write an article instead of trolling them.

Works    : http://writerbeat.com/articles/20400-Robert-Owen---A-Pioneer-of-Socialism

Bad Link : http://writerbeat.com/articles/articles/20400-Robert-Owen---A-Pioneer-of-Socialism

The URL in the link has the subdirectory "articles/" twice which means the directory/post does not exist where the link says it does.

Remove one of the "articles/" from the link and it will work.

Same problem with Jeanne's post.
Autumn Cote Added Feb 22, 2018 - 1:58pm
Tom,
I don’t see how I’m limiting Writer Beat’s potential by any large degree by not promoting articles about an event that happened 70 years ago.

Leroy,
My email database tells me the last time someone logged in, not the last time someone used the site.  So if you always use the site from the same computer, it’s possible you’d be tagged to receive one of my promotion emails despite using the site recently.

Lynn,
It’s the weirdest thing, I can’t get the second “articles” in the URL from appearing.
Tom C. Purcell Added Feb 22, 2018 - 2:03pm
"Tom, I don’t see how I’m limiting Writer Beat’s potential..."

That's obvious.  At least you're honest.
TexasLynn Added Feb 22, 2018 - 2:18pm
I don't know enough about your system to be much help.  The link is definitely the problem.  You would need to edit the hyperlink (using the little chain icon) and change the URL behind it.  Good luck :)

Autumn,

I wrote a blog post entitled, "The Manchurian Candidate," where I basically suggested that Trump had been hypnotized while Putin was romancing him in Moscow.  All he had to do was say the secret word and Trump would go back into an obedient trance.

You found me on the Dog Report.  But my friend Octopus whom you found on the Swash Zone never stuck around.  My other friend, Infidel753 lasted about two weeks.
Flying Junior Added Feb 22, 2018 - 2:24pm
Tom,

We read your article in horror.  We were disgusted.  If you are not attracting readers and recommendations, you only have yourself to blame.  Benjamin seemed to enjoy talking to you, why I can't possibly imagine.  Maybe you would be happier on a right-wing extremist hate site?
Tom C. Purcell Added Feb 22, 2018 - 2:32pm
You don't know the entire story, Jewnior.  It runs a little deeper, I had a profile for a few years with upwards of 40 followers, a half dozen or so 13+ 'liked' articles, thousands of reads and I brought others to the site.  The one time I suggested one of my own articles for promotion, I was denied.  And that's okay, I hold no grudge, as I always repeat it's her house but my contributions to this site have dwindled because of the hollywoodcost policy or you might call it, 'the Purcell-limitation clause.'
Autumn Cote Added Feb 22, 2018 - 2:42pm
Tom,
Don’t you think it’s a little dishonest to only quote part of my passage?  The amazing thing is that between my brother and various participants I’ve been your strongest defender.  I’ve defended you despite the fact a lot of your content serves to repel potential users and cause some existing users to quit.  No, I don’t expect any thanks nor do I want a “thank you.”  If I believed Writer Beat was more important than free speech, I would have banned you long ago.  However, because I have such high regard for free speech, I’ve jeopardized the viability of this site for a principal you don’t think I have any respect for.  I don’t about others, I find that fascinating.

Lynn,
I did exactly that and the link still has the word “articles” appearing twice after I re-publish the article.  I give up.

Flying Junior,
I remember now.  I found you during my days of surfing the internet for (no offense) bloggers in search of a readership.  I now spend all of my time sourcing new participants on a site called “Zerohedge.”  The site is great because it allows me to send personal messages and when people reply, it sends me their email address.  The following is what I say:

Would it be OK if I converted a comment(s) of yours into a stand-alone article for publication on my website?

There is no fee, I’m simply trying to add more content diversity for Writer Beat and I liked what you wrote. I’ll be sure to give you complete credit as the author. You can learn more about the site by checking out my profile (my email and the website address are there...intentionally vague here to avoid spamguard) or just reply "sure" and I'll handle the rest.
Tom C. Purcell Added Feb 22, 2018 - 2:47pm
Autumn, I made no attempt at dishonesty, your comments were inches away for all to view.

I appreciate the platform and for the commitment to free speech, however by having a clandestine policy to not promote my primary subject matter is almost like saying, "all of you are welcome to come to my party, and Tom, you can come but you have stay in the broom closet for the duration."
Flying Junior Added Feb 22, 2018 - 2:59pm
Another one bites the dust...

The guy who wrote about the Emperor's New Clothes was here yesterday and gone today.

Well you're doing a great job.  It is no small task.  I guess that explains why we meet a new contributor who doesn't always return for very long.
James Travil Added Feb 22, 2018 - 3:10pm
Zero Hedge is a great site to get non-fake news also. It's small, independent, credible, and more or less middle of the road politically (like myself).
Jeff Michka Added Feb 22, 2018 - 4:06pm
Tom, you can come but you have stay in the broom closet for the duration-Sounds like fair treatment of you.  I felt you should have been permanently booted for your lame Swastika av trick, so any article you'd commented on had nazi flags all over them.   You whine and complain, but like so many others, never take any personal responsibility for your actions.
Utpal Patel Added Feb 22, 2018 - 4:14pm
If you were going to send one of those promotional emails right now, what articles would you choose?  Do you always only choose two?
Tom C. Purcell Added Feb 22, 2018 - 4:15pm
Lol.  How many ounces of potato vodka is that so far today, Feuder?
Autumn Cote Added Feb 22, 2018 - 4:27pm
Tom,
For whatever it’s worth, your most recent article is something I might have promoted.  If I recall correctly, it was a little dated when I decided to send out my email this week.

James,
Did you come over from Zero Hedge?

Utpal,
I don’t have two articles worthy of promotion right now.  Doug Plumb’s article Florida Shooting Conspiracy qualifies but no other article checks all my boxes.  Dave Volek’s article Rollerball 1975 would be next closest, but I don’t like the fact Dave has not engaged any of his commenters.  For whatever it’s worth, I still have about 200 email addresses to work with this week.  In other words, my last email promotion didn’t go to every dormant account.
James Travil Added Feb 22, 2018 - 5:04pm
No actually I met someone on a Disqus chat who said I might like this place. I read some of the articles for a couple of weeks, then decided to go ahead and join. I like that it's such a diverse group!

Excuse me but I think some of these threads may be the first in history where Jews and non Jews understood one another's differences and spoke civilly to one another regarding these differences.

Yeah, turn the pressure up until the container blows is what the commie has in mind when he says to do this. You do that by restricting communication - JS Mills (and me)

Douggie,

I actually know several sites where Jews and Gentiles have come together with ease and friendship.  That would be like just about any blog ever created.  My bloggy mentor was a Jew.  His grandfather was a Jewish intellectual that was taken from his home in Prague by the Nazis.  This man had a reputation for being a trouble-maker.  It came out during the Nuremberg trials in 1958 that Adolf Eichmann himself ordered the prison train stopped.  The man was pulled out of the cattle car and summarily shot by the Germans.

Shot on the order of Adolf Eichmann.

Yes Douggie, Tom's original holocaust denial article and his pathetic attempt to revive it were both landmark efforts to promote understanding between people of different faiths.  Tom is a regular Billy Graham or Pope Francis.  Throw in a little Pope John Paul II.  Really beautiful man.

Michael B,
The second most important thing any of you do on this site is engage your commenters.  The last time I promoted one of your article you ignored your commenters.  What would happen if I promoted your most recent article?
Michael B. Added Feb 23, 2018 - 8:13am
Sorry Autumn, but I work long hours sometimes, so my presence here is accordingly sporadic - I don't mean to ignore anybody, but I'd rather you promoted posts from people who more closely meet your criteria.
James Travil Added Feb 23, 2018 - 11:57am

"Truth is the only think that can truly united people." Then why do you spue so many lies? That's all Douggie has got, lies and conspiracies about everything.  Douggie must be doing land office business now Alex Jones has admitted he laughs at Infowar users.

Doug Plumb Added Feb 24, 2018 - 6:10am
Jeff, I read to understand politics. I go to Alex Jones to find out what really happened in current events. He has the best experts on, that is why I go there.
Jeff Michka Added Feb 24, 2018 - 2:20pm
He has the best experts on, that is why I go there.-The conspiracy hot house that Infowars is must be a cuddle blanket for you, Douggie.  Makes your wild conspiracy theories more acceptable to the rightist idiot squad.
Doug Plumb Added Feb 24, 2018 - 7:55pm
Actually I spend about 5 min a week on Alex Jones. I mostly go you youtube talks on various subjects. Sometimes even TED. On here, when making arguments I look backwards and read books that are more than a hundred years old. Most of my arguments come from a knowledge of the Greeks, which is not extensive. If we had real education, everyone would have read Plato and Aristotle because they tell you everything (almost a bit more, the NT is needed to tie it all together, as Christ did, as the Romans did and as the West did in nation building, law making and constitution writing) - nothing new under the sun.
