SENEGAL-TRACKER NO. 6 - TOURISM

My Recent Posts

After having successfully entered an important cooperation with a local company we decided on the spot to drive from Dakar to St. Louis - at 2pm, that's 300 km one way....I had never been there because it's right at the top on the border to Mauritania, and was the first colonial city of the French in Senegal and the ancient capital of the "French Sudan", as the area from Senegal to today's Chad was called. But we didn't take a bus as shown above - we rented a car. I usually only use them for shorter distances...

There's a lot of space in this country to be explored. It's semi-aride, quite dry because the Sahara starts about 200 km north of here, and what you see on the right is the Baobab, the national tree of West Africa.

St. Louis from afar. The water is so clean here, you could drink it when it wasn't salt water :-)

Promenade in St. Louis. This is the only town in Senegal which resembles a European city...

Looks like France around 1900. In fact, it was like it that time....but personally I'm glad that these colonial times are a thing of the past, although millitary colonization has been replaced by economic colonization...

Really European ;-) Senegal is a good place to start when one wants to discover Western Africa. It's quite developed and can be very comfortable when one has the needed cash and needs hotels, and it's not as hazardous like further West - Mali or Burkina Faso for examples. These are countries for adventurers - even today.

Hope to see you here some time ! I'll be back here in a few months, so stay tuned.
