Big Medical Words, or: Holy Bovine, What's Wrong With Me?

My Recent Posts

Well, bad news on the medical front, as I went to the doctor Wednesday and was diagnosed with bilateral Eustachian salpingitis, which has effected my balance and hearing a little. He gave me a shot of Kenalog--which was a butt load of fun--and started me on antibiotics, and has high hopes that I'll recover.

(Just to be clear, the doctor's name is not Wednesday--that's the day I saw him.)

It's related to my biannual sinusitis, which is itself worsened by rhinitis. I haven't gotten the sinusitis nearly as often since my sinus surgery, but when I do get it, I get it good. By which I mean bad. By which I mean last week was kind of awful.

You remember my sinus surgery, right? This is the dog taking care of me afterward. For some reason, at that moment I was having difficulty breathing.

If I don't make it, I'd like everyone to help support my widow by buying our books. A lot.

Always be closing, as the sales people say.

Anyway, happy Easter! And no, if you're thinking it, it's not an April Fool's Day joke: I really do have bilateral Eustachian salpingitis.

It means pressure on my eardrums.

I think you'll be OK Mark - I've not heard of too many people succumbing to sinusitis. But you never know?
Hope your dizziness improves quick. It really messes you up.
I have the same sinus problems - just bad design.

Thanks, opher. This isn't my first fall off the sinus truck--but as long as I can poke a little fun at the situation, at least something good came out of it.  It's the season: First my wife got sick, then I got sick, and this weekend the dog was even sick. What can you do?

Happy Easter and may all your eggs be colored!

Hope you recover well from whatever that is.

Happy Easter, Leroy! A coworker just gave me a dozen turkey eggs ... I'm not sure there's enough dye in the world for those big honkin' things.

"Eustachian salpingitis" - that sounds a bit eary. Happy Easter, and keep taking a balanced view.
Mark Hunter Added Apr 1, 2018 - 7:39am
Oh, very eary indeed, or so I hear. Happy Easter!

Mark Hunter,
At least your clumsiness is not a lifetime affliction. Get well soon. I hope the Easter bunny makes it over that way.

My wife had a bad case of sinusitis years back. Her Doctor said it was caused by all of the nose drops that she used when she was younger. His remedy?......More nose drops.
Your dog is a beauty!
Happy Easter!

Eustachian, get that, ear canals (which are easy to damage, especially if you have sinus issues).  But "salpingitis," either you misheard or . . . April Fools!
Neil Lock Added Apr 1, 2018 - 11:52am
No, John; no April Fool here. I too had to look up "salpingitis." On its own, the word is normally applied to some tubes rather lower down. That's why Mark had to say "Eustachian."

In any case, Mark, feel better . . . .

Have you discussed moving to an alternate climate with your ENT?  Maybe somewhere more arid, or closer to the equator?  I know it's not always the answer but for some, it can really lead to improvement.  Happy Easter!

Take care, I wish you well!

Oh, Pardero ... you haven't read any of my old humor columns. My clumsiness IS a lifetime affliction!

Happy Easter to you, Bill, and yep -- Beowulf truly is a beauty. We make sure to never give him nose drops!

John, Neil, the joke was on me when I originally Googled that word by itself. This is one of those cases where context truly does matter.

I haven't discussed changing climates with my doctor, Tom, but I have discussed it with my wife. The good part: No more Indiana winters. The bad part: No more Indiana springs, summers, or autumns. I'm holding out for that best seller status so I can buy a winter home in Arizona. It's not looking good.

Thanks, Dino! These sinus infections take a long time for me to get through, but I do get through them eventually.

Kenalog is one of the trade names for the generic steroid "triamcinolone."

As long as you don't get a bovine spongaform radical protein otherwise known as Mad Cow Disease you will probably be OK Mark. I hope you get better soon.

All the best in your recovery. Your fire department needs you!

Yes it is, and yet whenever I hear the name I have an overwhelming urge to say "I like my Kenalog corn flakes with milk and a little sugar".
Mark Hunter Added Apr 3, 2018 - 12:15am
James, it's amazing how much more interesting many medical conditions are when they go by their scientific name.
Mark Hunter Added Apr 3, 2018 - 12:20am
Thanks, Dave! My head would explode if I had to wear an air mask right now, but I'd imagine I'll be much better in another week or so. It always takes some extra effort to kick my sinus infections.
