DO YOU WANT TO SUPPORT WB ?

I've seen that a lot of people here complaining about the bugs the site has - be it the "search" possibilities, the "publish" button.....maybe there are other bugs which I haven't noticed, but since I haven't noticed them, they didn't disturb me then.

So, guys, Autumn has said there's no cash around to professionally fix it, so we have two possibilities:

a) we accept the bugs

b) we donate something to her so she can fix it.

Easy, isn't it ? I mean, all of us can spare 20 bucks, some even more I guess. And when we have 50 regulars here, we can get to 1'000 bucks. And as far as I know, developing a professional website (for example on Wordpress), or fixing bugs and transporting a site to a new location, costs about that in Switzerland, and I have friends in Cameroon who do it for 300 bucks. And they are GOOD.

So, everybody who is willing to spare something might write a short reply here. Maybe then we can set up something.

Is that ok ?

Why not.

For the record, I'm not asking for contributions nor do I think $1,000 in contributions would change anything about our current predicament.  If you should happen to know a programmer / website design professional that can speak English well, that's what I need right now.

A friend of mine. Say hello from me. If you need his phone number or WhatsApp write me a mail so I can give it to you. He's Anglophone and probably a lot cheaper that a US or European programmer.

I had a fellow from India do some interactive HTML programming for me five years ago. You can take a look at his work by starting my Food Chain simulation at http://davevolek.org/FoodChain/Quest/quest.php

I was paying him C$20/hour, which is a lot less than Canadian programmers. He was quite professional in both projects I had him build for me. The only fault I saw is that he wanted to be paid once a week, but I was able to accept this Asian way of doing business. We got along well. Should I get some extra money somehow, I have another project for him.

One more day until I sign off from WB!

When we first started Writer Beat we hired a firm out of Spain, we then went to a firm out of the Ukraine and now we’re working with a company from India.  In each case I feel like a ton has been lost in translation and that we would have been far better off today if we had spent a little more and developed the site with a firm closer to home.  So while I thank you for the suggestions, I’m going to pursue other people. I actually just got an email from someone (perhaps through this article) that sounds very promising.
Even A Broken Clock Added Jun 28, 2018 - 5:04pm
Autumn - would you consider a GoFundMe effort? That doesn't solve the issue with getting a competent programmer, but it would be interesting to see the response, if nothing else.

I have found a way to limit my posts to a single post, but it is a bit involved. It is:

Open up a second Writerbeat page set on By Submission Date
Try posting the post by submitting it once.
Check on the By Submission Date, refreshing the page.
If it is not there, copy your post into the buffer. Switch to your profile, then when it comes up, switch to new post.
Paste your content back in and add your title and tags.
Submit. Check the By Submission Date

Every time I've tried that, the post has come up.

While I’m sure money can solve the problems with Writer Beat, money is the least of my problems.  My brother has no interest in keeping the current system and I can’t stand the system he wants to move us to.  Should we decide to part ways, it will be a huge weight of his shoulders as everything he’s doing, he’s doing as a favor to me.  He even splits the costs with me.

Furthermore, I don’t think I can manage the technical aspects of Writer Beat without his assistance.  So even if a person who I trust and had the necessary technical skills materialized, I’m extremely hesitant to move forward and allow my brother to leave my side.  Let’s also not forget, I’m not even sure what technical skills are necessary to manage this site as it’s been bastardized (moving from Spain, Ukraine & now India) so badly.

Hmmm...overall, I'd say that the technical quirks of the site are totally mirroring its contributors, lol. Being a seasoned veteran of WB, I've come to regard the site in the same ways as my fellow WBers, in the sense that, as much as they both piss me off sometimes, I still like them, warts and all. Thank you, AC!!!! By the way, I still think that you're a hot, yet patrician redhead, lol!

Half of my reason for being here ... regardless of how much I have come to enjoy it since I have come here ... is due to the fact that I am trying to rebuild my life and reestablish an online presence of sorts.
Flying Junior Added Jun 29, 2018 - 1:57am
Great to hear the history of the IT people that set up the WB.

That's really far out.

That said.  How hard is it to only hit publish one time and then look for your article via submission date or profile?  We've all seen the frustrated attempts to publish with ten, twenty, thirty or more...

Ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty or more, the Bloody Red Baron was rollin' up the score...

Anyone who would holler about this, (R***,) would have to be either expecting undue privilege or simply not that bright.  aka complainers.

The site is functioning quite adequately for those with the intelligence to use it.
Dr. Rupert Green Added Jun 29, 2018 - 4:09am
Autumn, irrespective of your magnanimity and anti-avarice stance, money will make some of our most ardent WB conservatives sing odes to liberalism. Hence, please set up a site where friends of FB can donate to its upgrade.

I have always stated a nonprofit element to WB could garner funds.

I agree with Fj.  I haven't had a problem with submission.
Ward Tipton Added Jun 29, 2018 - 9:52am
I did have a problem the very first time I published ... I was scared to death I would get banned ... I think I published that first article about seventeen times? I do not think I have had any issues since then however, though occasionally my laptop does like to double tap when I hit the enter key ... so it is possible.

(This is where I resubmit my comment seventeen times ... just to be funny? Right?)

Stoney, it's a great idea and if Autumn sets up a Pay Pal, Patreon or similar account for donations I'm in.

Autumn, I'm too busy with my mothers terminal decline to volunteer at the moment. Although I now have to spend the first half hour of every visit making sure she understands who I am ("Who is this old man telling me he's Ian, my Ian isn't even in long trousers yet,") we don't want to lose her but it would be a mercy if she slipped away quietly in her sleep. Instead it's turning into something like one of those old Jimmy Cagney gangster films where he staggers around clutching his chest and saying "You dirty rat," for half the duration.
I'm rather preoccupied.
As we don't know what system your bother would like to move to we can't comment on that, but I know a lot of mature websites have experienced problems since wordpress implemented a 'new' front end system 'calypso', written entirely in Java Script last year, and their efforts to fix some of the clunkiness has made matters worse in a lot of cases. So maybe if the site is obsolete it's time to move on.
Gotta go now, I'm covering the school run today, my son's playing a music festival this weekend. Keep us informed how things are going, a lot of us are willing to help.

Please copy me (TexasLynn).  I'm fairly technical and might either be able to help or know somebody.

Would need to know hosting environment, programming language, database information. etc...

Your brother may be right.  It's usually easier (and cheaper) to move to a service without customized code; but in the end, it's your decision.
wsucram15 Added Jun 29, 2018 - 12:06pm
Autumn..I had my BF son look at this page some time ago, the cost is astronomical to bring up the site and maintain it. He gave me a US cost...so I understand.
So are you really just trying to brace everyone because you dont like the way it is being maintained in India which is 1/100th of the cost and your brother really doesnt want to do this anymore?

Im not rich but good with money and I know others are as well..but you have to let us know what you want to do.
If SEF can fix it why not let him try..he loves the site almost as much as you do I bet.
SEF.., let me know.

Ian,
Best wishes to your mother.

To all,
The more I think about it the more I think sticking with my brother is the way to go.  Below is the link to the new platform. The best way any of you can help me is to login and play around.  What doesn’t work?  What would you do to improve the site?

Looks cool, the search function works. But I can't login anymore with my user and PW and I don't like to login via another site.

Do you transport all the articles ? Maybe one thing: On my Samsung dullphone the font is much less clear than on this usual site.

Otherwise thumbs up :)
Stone-Eater Added Jun 29, 2018 - 2:19pm
BTW: Login on PC doesn't work as well. And the pictures which were on the article originally don't show. But I guess that would be too much of work because the links from the articles to the pics database can't be restored, or that would be a nearly impossible task.

Which software are you using for the site ? Selfmade HTML code or a specific tool ?
Autumn Cote Added Jun 29, 2018 - 3:38pm
We still haven't attempted a data transfer.  So in order to test the site, which I encourage everyone to do, you need to create a new account.
I have no idea what software we're using, but I will ask my brother.
Stone-Eater Added Jun 29, 2018 - 3:43pm

Autumn, the new site looks fine although I have not created account to log in yet. I'll do it as soon as I have time.

Tried to register but didn't get the confirmation mail neither in Inbox nor Spam folder.
Flying Junior Added Jul 1, 2018 - 12:48am
Autumn,

Maybe you should delete any unsuccessful attempts to register.  I have already got two, "email already exists," without any chance to change password.
Neil Lock Added Jul 1, 2018 - 3:38am
Autumn: I've tried the new site, too. I also hit the problem of needing to log in but not being able to. The colo(u)rs aren't as brash as on the old site, which makes the articles on the main page look less individual. But the few bits of it I explored seemed to be running OK.

Whether you are better off going to a new "packaged" site or continuing with a custom solution will depend on where you want to go with WB in the longer term. If you won't need any facilities beyond what the package provides, I think you'll be better off going with the package. And not just financially; there may also be advantages (e.g. in reliability) through not having to host the site yourself.
Kurt Bresler Added Jul 1, 2018 - 5:50am
Hi Autumn,  I signed up for the new site but looks like the email verification process is a bit slow, that's ok,  I'll try to sign in again later.

My brother is working on the login problem.  I'll update you all when it has been fixed.

Neil,
In terms of all this technical stuff, I've decided to let my brother lead and he wants to go with this new platform.  When I first commented in this thread, I was seriously thinking about going it alone.
Stone-Eater Added Jul 2, 2018 - 11:08am
OK *thumbs up*
Ward Tipton Added Jul 2, 2018 - 11:51pm
Joomla with Community Builder ... but that would just be because that is where my experience is. The new site looks nice from the front but I have not had time to play with it yet. A little bit of database management and manipulation should move all of the registered users over fairly easily but not sure about the different database setups.
