We can't just ignore away societal and institutionalized racism

I WANT to live in a world where gender/ethnicity/sexual orientation doesn't matter - a world where everyone gets fair and equal consideration based on their deeds - that's the world I want. But it's not the world we HAVE.

A proposed solution by many is to shut our eyes and ears really tight and just BELIEVE everyone is equal until - POOF - like magic, it happens and we all live in and enjoy this ideal world. If that's your "solution", you're just another part of the problem. There are white supremacists still openly marching through your streets and people want to pretend everything's fair and equal and we should all just shut up about it?

I'm not going to pretend that I live in a world where black people in America (for example) don't experience life-altering inequality on a regular basis, because I treat everyone equally. I guess it's probably some sort of extreme libertarian bulls--t that I don't subscribe to.

Good one, Sol-
I would have thought that we would have continued to advance in these areas over the years, but it appears that the revival of hate is all around us.
It's pretty obvious who the perpetrators are. It's all part of an effort to divide our country and make it ripe for the picking. Technology has become the puppet strings to change minds and attitudes, and has been used in this application for years by marketing agencies and whoever wants or needs to influence and control the masses.
Divide and Conquer - It's been used for eons as the tool to rule nations. It was pretty obvious that Steve Bannon was Trump's tool in this effort, but I think he moved a bit too quick and had to be stifled.
The same technique can be applied in computer algorithms applied to slowly modify people's views or ideas. First work with those who are the easiest to "sway" and then use both these people and the algorithm to slowly modify those who need a bit more "persuasion".
We have become the one's controlled by the technology that we originally created to help us control our world.

1) You don't know who is marching openly through my streets. LOL. Fail.

2) The idea that white supremacism is an ordinary, everyday, widely-supported phenomenon is simply false. It is a rare event whipped up by treasure-hunting media who presents rare species as common things.

3) The idea that being black means you experience life-altering inequality is also, simply false. See #2. You may want to look up racism hoaxes.

4) You believe lies and then spend your time freaking out about them. That's not good for your health. You are killing yourself.

5) What I've said is not libertarian in any way. You don't even know what libertarianism is.

Sigh. That was way too easy.

There are far more black supremacists marching on our streets (BLM, Nation of Islam, etc) than White supremacists.

I don't know how in the world you could blame anything on libertarianism as that is completely a "live and let live" philosophy.  That is the LEAST likely philosophy to engage in intolerant behavior.

ad I have seen episodes of Star Treks mirroring the world of which you speak. It is really unfear that a man is prevented from having sex with his horse. I mean legally. Typhoid Mary has long been discriminated against in that she is denied food handlers permit to cook food in the restaurant where you take your family. The government has no right legislating what it sees as improper behavior that is detrimental to the larger public.

Then ours is an evolving nation, where horses were ran into the ground or loaded with back breaking weights as we learned and advanced. Todays, we do not have pony express and horse/mules doing the heavy lifting. In that evolving process, Blacks were seen as less than lower animals, justifying their inhumane treatment. We got enlightened in the evolution process (knowledge increased) and laws were enacted to make Blacks legally humans. Unfortunately, old habits die hard.

We have long had spiritual laws guiding our attitudes and perceptions of gays. God said it is wrong. Is God a liar or a bigot? Telling a people their infallible God is wrong is problematic. It appears they would rather accept his bigotry.

You liberals are quite insane.  Anyone who has passed basic math knows racism isn't an issue today.  Look at all the 'educated' nitwits on this thread.

Black on black crime is the worst problem.

You white liberals support abortion, which is responsible for 63% of all black deaths in a year,  yet you holler about 'racism'.

Blacks make up 12% of the American population and 36% of all abortions.

Police brutality is a myth.

Black on white racism is a far worse problem than white on black racism today.

Rupert, let me point out that as long as YOU are willing to believe that others think you are inferior, you WILL be inferior as a result of your insecurity.

As an educated and socially quite liberal white male, I find it as difficult to handle the black..or brown...or green...man or woman who is uncomfortable with who he is as I do the white male or female.

Can you address for us why there are so many of the black community willing to picture themselves as persecuted by others just because the others have different skin colors than they?

I find it difficult to understand why so many black youths have chosen uncivilized ways of life that have lead to high rates of conviction in courts of law, especially given the number of times that the court systems have given them "second" chances.  (See:  Long rap sheets.)

Can you tell us why both common sense and community seems to be missing from their upbringings?

Please don't trot out the canards of poverty and education unless you address why our social programs are such failures...Trillions have been spent on these issues with little to show for it.

Why isn't the black man comfortable with who he is?  And if the discomfort has reason, what is it that the black man needs to achieve the self-esteem necessary for personal satisfaction?

Please don't take this questioning as an anti-black screed.  It is a summation of my lifetime of observation and experiences.  I'm willing to like you for what you are, not for what you think you should be.

Um ... kind of depends on the definition of failure and proving the original intent of the programs. They have been very successful in extending poverty across multiple generations and replacing the family with the State. Some would even suggest that was the original intent and that they have, by those standards been very successful ... not to the benefit of the people of course, but it was never about helping the people, only ensuring continued control and power. Moggie...Isn't this the exact reason why de facto segregation is occurring now that de jure segregation is illegal?

In my neck of the woods, it was the Irish and Germans first, followed by the Armenians, the Haitians, and now the Somalis.  There is also the economic factors that segregated blacks into the southern areas of the town, and religious ones that moved the Jew out to the west.

Aren't the above cultural affinities and behaviors that are so troublesome today, and which we are discussing here?

If we are all so open and welcoming, why are we having this problem?

This actually goes the more intransigent problem of political factions, all wanting the same types of conditions in which to live, and all talking up a storm that never gets past the hot wind stage.

As for the white supremacists and the visceral hatred that the engender, why is anyone granting them so much power over the conversation?  They are insignificant blowhards much like race baiters such as Reverend Al and Jessie Jackson.     It's much like all of the liberals ceding so much power to Fox News which has, at best a viewership of 1.5/325000ths of our population, and the conservatives ceding power to MSNBC and CNN which have, combined about half of Fox's viewership.

It's high time the thinking part of the population stepped back from the end of the diving board, and it's high time we start devising and developing ideas that forestall the stampedes that the reacting segments of our communities get into from time to tie.

Sol, welcome to WB.  You've met a few of WB's cryptofascist brigade.  Including Pope Rya.  These folks desperately want a world that honors white supremacy, and live in abject fear of their racial majority slipping into the ditch it's bound to wind up in.  Trump's wall is just a white nationalist pacifier, so they willingly vote for him in 2020, and/or roll over and applaud when he make his presidency   permanent. One way or another, the white race is scheduled for minority status, and the whities are really scared because they know how they've treated minorities, and it could be payback time.  Meanwhile, if Orange Douche can hurt federal workers, then the base applauds.  Afterall, it hurts "the Other" tribe.  And hurting people IS the idea.

@ Owl.
"Rupert, let me point out that as long as YOU are willing to believe that others think you are inferior, you WILL be inferior as a result of your insecurity."

Firstly, let me explain that not all Blacks are Black.  My unique way of saying things is confounding to some, so to simply put, Black is not a monolithic group. As a Caribbean Black, from a majority Black nation--Jamaica, I come to America with a different experience from that of the Black Americans. I saw Black doctors, newscasters, teachers, lawyers, and such in my country.  We did not have to (a) step aside when a White approach, (b) avoid eye contact with Whites, (c) and fear looking at a White woman least we were accused of rape. Also, we did not have to sit at the back of busses, be refused service in schools, hotels, and hospital as Black Americans were.

Even though slavery was ended in Jamaica in 1834 (1865 in the US), Black Americans still experienced the effect of slavery to this day ( e.g., lynching, whether in prisons or in schools). I distinctly remember the lynching of James Byrd who was dismembered while being dragged from the back of a pickup truck in 1998.

The recent laws that continue to be passed [ e.g, giving Civil Rights (1965), allowing interracial marriage (1967), allowing integration of school (1964)] evidenced the impact of extended enslavement. The Haitian Blacks come with a badass attitude of kinking the Whiteman's ass to the extent that they are feared and will forever be punished. Even though, they should be thanked for running the French out of America and landing their Territories to the US.  Look how quickly the US is willing to offer the Cubans refugee status while interdicting the Haitians at sea and turning them back. You can also look at how the liberal Clintons robbed the Billions raised to rebuild Haiti.

The differences between the Jamaicans and the Black American are well noted by Whites business; thus, Jamaicans would be readily employed over the Black Americans. The Jamaicans were revered as hard workers and the Black Americans as "lazy". Of course, this was a divide and conquer tactics being used.

The unlearned Jamaicans would boast about their high employment prospect compared to Blacks, even calling the Black American lazy. I do not engage in such activities because I know the Black Americans opened up this country for all other immigrants and we are here on their backs. Additionally, they were so beaten down in their fights for equal rights and justice that when it [ Civil Rights ] came, many Black Americans were dead or so beaten down, they could not make use of the opportunity. Blacks from other nations did and instead of helping the surviving Black American along, they joined Whites in perpetuating the notions that Black Americans were lazy.

Significantly, I know when the police are going to shoot a Blackman down, they do not ask him/her to speak so as to determine if it is a Jamaican, Trinidadian, Bajan, Guyanese, African, or American Black.

"As an educated and socially quite liberal white male, I find it as difficult to handle the black..or brown...or green...man or woman who is uncomfortable with who he is as I do the white male or female. Can you address for us why there are so many of the black community willing to picture themselves as persecuted by others just because the others have different skin colors than they?" (Owl).

Even liberal Whites are uncomfortable with Blacks who do not know their place. The liberal Democrats love Blacks as long as they remain of the Democratic plantation. However, there is merit to your question.

I, too, find it uncomfortable with Blacks who are so ignorant of their history that it vexes me.  However, that stance would prove me ignorant of the machinations and structures in place to have Blacks conditioned that they are inferior. Several pathologies emerge.

First, Blacks conditioning in America and other places had them believing almighty God is a White being to whose son, Jesus, they must continually bow and pray, while sitting and waiting (leave it to Jesus) for his return to addresses miseducation of their children, police brutality, and the school to prison pipeline, for example. Black children see their parents bowing before White images of God in churches. Hence, when the White police have their boots on those youth's heads in wrongfully arresting them, they believe they are bowing and being supplicant
Dr. Rupert Green Added Jan 12, 2019 - 7:46am
Continued.

Secondly, the conditioning--where lighter Blacks gained the privilege to be in massas house, to sleep with him and to inform of the field slaves' plots to escape, developed a self-hatred of the kinky hair, thick lips, broad noses, and dark skin. Indeed, if you are Black step back, if you are Brown stick around, and if you are White you are alright still affect many Blacks.  They spend billions with non-Black businesses for skin lightening cream/bleach and White-like hair products.  A popular saying in my native Jamaica is anything too Black is no good.

As it is difficult to describe the taste of good wine to a person, it will be difficult to describe the experience of being Black in America to a liberal or any other Whites. Just imagine your Black self walking with your Black child and s/he continually asks you, "Daddy, why are those White old ladies holding on to their purses when we approach them?" Frighteningly, even Blacks react fearfully to some Black youth.  Who then would want to be Black?

"I find it difficult to understand why so many black youths have chosen uncivilized ways of life that have lead to high rates of conviction in courts of law, especially given the number of times that the court systems have given them "second" chances.  (See:  Long rap sheets)." Can you tell us why both common sense and community seems to be missing from their upbringings?

As I previously stated, you would have to walk in Blacks' shoe to gain the knowledge you seek. For a self-described liberal, you "uncivilized" word choice harkens to the word "animals" that many White teachers and others use to describe Black children. I am not questioning your affiliation, but us Blacks developed a capacity to decern coded words and dog whistles.

As a person who has been arrested seven times (no criminal record). The high rate of convictions of Blacks is something they cannot easily escape. It was shocking to hear how Blacks were being preyed upon by police in Flint, Michigan.  Let's start with schooling. One of its purposes is social sorting. It determines who becomes criminals and who becomes police and good citizens. Recently, NYC mayor and the school chancellor proposed to have more Blacks entering the city's elite schoolsWhite folks and Asians were up in arms. They did not want those ignorant Blacks in their[public schools] to bring them down.

So, having Blacks become doctors, engineers, scientist, lawyers will threaten Whites and Asian children's lock on those positions.  Blacks are better off serving as fodder for the criminal injustice system--overtime for police who make excessive and needless arrests. Simply consider the powerful people who depend on the criminal injustice system- Judges, DAs, lawyers, police officers, corrections officers, court officers, upstate NY communities,  and such--who are majority Whites.  Their spouses are the majority of White teachers in the nation's schools. These people depend on Black children going to jail. Do you think they will teach to have Black children compete with White children or with their spouses? Thank President Trump for his recent prison reform.  However, that is a sham, his reform does not affect state prisons, where most of the Black inmates are.

You can be given all the second chances in the world. If schools socialize Black children to live in prisons, and prisons provide no skill training, there will be recidivism.

I have never lived in a project and I visited one, where urine and feces were in the elevator. Some good poor people live in the projects and have raised good children. However, when projects were designed to hold and control Blacks, it is hard for some to escape. There is learned helplessness in such environments, where residents are at the m
