Anniversaries.

My Recent Posts

This year is a year of anniversaries and a good one at it. My next article will start off the series and about the legendary Apollo Theater which celebrates it's 85th Anniversary. It will be written from a personal viewpoint and what it means to me as a native born New Yorker.

A few years back I used to watch an amazing program about The Apollo Theater some time in the middle of the night on broadcast TV.  It was video of hour-long performances complete with plenty of audience interaction.  If not for this one period of time and this one source, I would have never had any idea what happenned at The Apollo other than what I have read in books.  The same channel used to play films of shows from the Grand Ole Opry circa 1950 featuring such luminaries as The Carter Family, Grandpa Jones, Lonzo and Oscar and a host of others.

I look forward to your series.  I hope there is some audio and videos.

Thanks Flying Junior. I remember Showtime At The Apollo which used to come on Saturday nights at 1am. My siblings and I watched it before we went to bed and to church Sunday Morning. Definitely watch for it.
As for Jeffry Gilbert, don't have anything nice to say: BE QUIET!!

Gee, here Greg wants to discuss the Apollo as an American cultural icon. (that's right, it is, just not a cultural icon of most white people.)  Please talk about the Apollo as an adjunct to Jazz, a solid cultural pillar of America, and ongoing expression of creative faith in a community.  Leave it to ol Moggy, trying to link the Apollo and all about it to a hated rightist org, BLM.  The dislike is because we won't say "Black Lives Don't Matter, good white people do matter."  Maybe, just maybe,  but I'm not holding my breath.

Poor Gregory, thinks he's a Christian and his staunch supporters on WB are the white liberals who are the biggest enemies of the Black community, Jeff and FJ.  So very tragic.
